After seeing the blog of the girl who is in Australia and having the same feeling about the indian Enlish. I actually feel released. Don't feel unconfident if you don't understand Indian.
Ever since i came to Australia, I never worried about my pronunciation cuz some Aussie guys said i pronounced not bad.
Well well well....
there r two english that most ppl can't understand . one is Japanese English, another is Indian english. lucky i have no japanese friends here while i have to communicate with indian from time to time when i do shopping, or occasionally deal with crashers.
the first week when i was in aust, i met a indian guy called kay. when he called me or even he spoke in front of me, i hardly understood any word from him. was that bcuz of my poor listening comprehension? i was frustrated for a long time till my friend told me it was not my problem. After that, i knew that indian english is different from any other english. even some aussie may also say" sorry?" to indian when they don't understand what those indian r talking about. for example, usually we pronounced "company" as"kлmpni", while indian speak "gombni". terrible ......
well, one yr life in sydney make me more or less adapt to English of different accents gradually.
Numerous indian cashers work in supermarkets. I prefer coles to woolworth due to only coles have the nice cheap cheese cakes. but i found there r more indian cashers working in coles than woolworth, which is also a headache to me. In most cases i can well understand what those indian cashers talk and sometime we can communicate a bit. Indian guys like talking with chinese girls, and it is something like non-stop talking. Indian guy cashers are mostly kind to chinese female customers, especially girls.
Gosh! i m worried about my spoken english. aussie don't initially communicate with our overseas students of non-english background. and we r also shy to talk with them. that's no good.
although i can speak very word clearly and standardly, it's not easy for me to speak fluently and fast in the area of academic discussion.
i know indian r happy to talk with any one. but if i practise oral english with them , i will well speak indian-english some day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yesterday afternoon, when i was enjoying music, some one knocked at door loudly and rudely. My flatmate answered the door followed by me. there r two ppl of indian kind standing outside.
"#%$#%#%#$%" the woman said to my flatmate
"sorry?" my flatmate was a bit confused.
"@#$@#$@%@#$" the woman repeated.
I went straight and asked them twice. then i got some key words and understood what they meant. They came here for a census about "Demography". But if they said "demographic census" or "demographic survey" directly, both of us can easily undersood, though the woman had terrible indian accent, while the man was just ok.
The woman thought my flatmate and i might not know what was about"demographic census", so she described it as "counting ppl"
Ok, i know what does"counting" mean only if she can speake clearly. but she pronounced "counting" as "Gonding"........god...
i frowned and confused...
"Gonding , gonding people....." the woman repeat with body language..
suddenly i totally undersood what she was talking about...
fuck!
then i answered her question and she gave me a form which is about detail of ppl living in aust no matter u r citizen or not.
when i said good bye to them . i closed door and compained to my flatmate " that is fucking terrible! i even can't understand what they were talking about...i can't understand indian english! god! that's really difficult for me to understand indian english!!"......
though indian have awful accent, they still speak very fluently and have no difficulty to communicate with aussie..
sigh....
it's not difficlut to judge a person who is chinese or korean or japanese by his accent. chin english is unique as well, but better than indian english to understand.
