Testing is not Playing
When a gamer sits down in front of his favourite game, it is only for fun. When testing a game, a tester can have fun, but the main goal is to explore, observe and stress the game. When a gamer is playing, he will typically follow the objectives of the game, in the proper order, in the hopes of getting to the next level. The tester must try things differently, not follow the rules, search out alternate possible ways of playing the game and try and find faults, big and small. This is typically called “playing outside of the box”.
For example, the main character of a game enters a room with 3 bad guys, a treasure chest with a key, and a locked exit door. A gamer will kill the enemies, open the treasure chest to get the key, unlock the door and exit. A tester must try this, but must also try to do it differently. A tester will destroy only one of the 3 bad guys (will the other 2 react differently if not attacked?), then try and open the door before getting the key (is the door really locked, or can it be opened before getting the key?), then try and get the key, followed by finally destroying the other 2 bad guys.
Testing ≠ QA
No amount of testing will improve the quality of a computer program.
Testing'sprimary contribution to quality is toidentify problemsthat we wish we could have prevented in the first place.
The mission of QA is toprevent defectsin the first place as well as to remove defects that do creep into the product. That requiresprocessesbeyond testing.
wX:H(E|Nm0Testing is only part of quality assurance activities.
