Configuring a Citrix XenApp published application or Citrix XenApp published content

Use the Citrix XenApp tab to configure the application as a Citrix XenApp published application or to publish content. Access to a published XenApp application depends on the settings that you configured on the Access Control tab.

Citrix XenApp published application

A Citrix XenApp published application is an application that runs on a Citrix XenApp server, but behaves as if it were running on the user's computer. When you configure a Citrix XenApp published application in the Management Console, this will create the published application in the Citrix XenApp environment, including all options and access control types that have been configured in the Management Console. The command line of the Citrix XenApp published application will point to RES Workspace Manager with the application ID as a parameter, so that the application will be managed by RES Workspace Manager. The parent menu structure of the application will be used as the Program Neighborhood Folder property of the application. This property changes automatically when you change the name of one of the parent menus or when you move the application to another menu.

Configuration

  1. Click the Applications node > Start Menu tab.
  2. Select the application that you want to publish and click Edit. This opens the Edit application window.
  3. Go to Configuration > Publishing > Citrix XenApp Published Application.
  4. Select Enable Citrix XenApp Application Publishing. This shows all publication options in the window.
  5. Click the Settings tab to configure the settings for the application.
    1. Select a value in the Session Window Size field to determine the window size of the session.
    2. Select a value in the Colors field to determine the amount of colors to be used in the session.
    3. To enable sound in the session, select Enable Sound.
      • To select this as a minimum requirement, select Minimum Requirement.
    4. Select a value in the Encryption Level field to configure the encryption level for the session. If you use Citrix XenApp Secure Gateway, Basic is sufficient.
      • To select this as a minimum requirement, select Minimum Requirement.
    5. To create a passthrough mechanism for the Citrix XenApp published application, select Enable Instant Passthrough for computers not publishing this application. An Instant Passthrough mechanism is a shortcut to an application located on a remote server. When a user accesses the shortcut, his request will automatically be redirected to a remote server on which the application is located.
      • If the application should start locally if possible, select Do not passthrough if application is available on local computer.
      • To configure the Instant Passthrough settings, click Instant Passthrough settings. This will open the Instant Passthrough settings window.
      • To publish configured file associations as content redirection for published applications, select Enable content redirection (using File Associations).
    6. To restore the default settings that you configured on the Defaults tab of Application Virtualization > Citrix XenApp Publishing in the Setup menu, click Restore defaults.
  6. Click the Program Neighborhood tab to configure the Program Neighborhood settings of the application.
    • To disallow the creation of subfolders in the Program Neighborhood Folder, select Do not create subfolders in Program Neighborhood Folder.
    • To add all published applications to the client's Start Menu, select Add to client's Start Menu.
      • To place all published applications in the Programs folder, select Place under Programs folder. This option only applies to users that connect to Citrix XenApp servers using the PN Agent.
    • To specify the Start Menu folder in which the published applications will be placed, enter its location in the Start Menu folder field. This option only applies for users that connect to Citrix XenApp servers using the PN Agent.
    • To add a shortcut to the published applications on the client's desktop, select Add shortcut to the client's desktop.
  7. Click the Servers tab to select on which server(s) the application should be published.
    • To select a XenApp server, select it in the list of Available Servers and use the arrows to move it to the list of Configured Servers. You can only select Citrix XenApp servers that you made available for Citrix XenApp application publishing on the Defaults tab of the node Application Virtualization > Citrix XenApp Publishing in the Setup menu.
    • To select only from server groups, select Show only server groups.
  8. After configuring all settings and options, click OK. The application is published on the specified servers.

Citrix XenApp published content

Citrix XenApp published content allows you to publish document files, media files, Web URLs, and any other type of file from any network location in the user workspace. Users can access content in the same way they access published applications.

Configuration

  1. Click the Applications node > Start Menu tab.
  2. Select the application that you want to publish and click Edit. This opens the Edit application window.
  3. Click Publishing > Citrix XenApp Published Application.
  4. Select Enable Citrix XenApp Application Publishing.
  5. Select Publish as Content. This shows the necessary Program Neighborhood configuration options to configure Citrix XenApp Content Publishing. Because Content Publishing only requires a command line and Access Control, all other application configuration options will be disabled.
    • To disallow the creation of subfolders in the Program Neighborhood Folder, select Do not create subfolders in Program Neighborhood Folder.
    • To add all published content to the client's Start Menu, select Add to client's Start Menu.
      • To place all published content under the Programs folder, select Place under Programs folder. This option only applies for users that connect to Citrix XenApp servers using the PN Agent.
    • To specify the Start Menu folder in which the published applications will be placed, enter its location in the Start Menu folder field. This option only applies for users that connect to Citrix XenApp servers using the PN Agent.
    • To add a shortcut to the published content on the client's desktop, select Add shortcut to the client's desktop.
  6. Click the Properties tab.
  7. In the Command line field, specify the path to the location of the content that you want to publish.

lampTip

If a new managed application is created in RES Workspace Manager and, for example, c:\temp\test.xls is entered at the command line, this will automatically be changed to ...\...\excel.exe. To prevent this, because you want the Microsoft Excel file to be published as a resource, you should first enable Publish as content and only then enter, for example, c:\temp\test.xls in the command line.

  1. Open the Citrix XenApp Management Console and create a published application.
  2. When specifying the application executable, enter "pwrgate.exe" with the parameter [ID] "%*". This specifies the application ID of the application that should be started. You can also specify the application GUID instead. Each application that is created in the Management Console has its own unique ID number and GUID. You can find this ID and GUID on the General tab of the Edit applicationwindow.
  3. Click the node Composition > Applications in the Management Console.
  4. Click Add Application to create the XenApp published application in RES Workspace Manager. This opens a wizard. Follow the steps of the wizard to configure the basic settings of the application. When you have finished the wizard, the Edit application window opens.
  5. Click Configuration > Publishing > Citrix XenApp Published Application.
  6. Configure the application as a published application.
