  • Double Trouble

    2007-11-06 04:50:35

Getting a job is good. What about getting two?

I am a part time table games dealer working in a casino. I do it for fun and I love that job very much. On a Blackjack table, whenever a patron gets two Aces on the first cards, they are supposed to double down on each Ace. People will say double trouble in this situation. If you don't understand anything about casino table games, you probably won't understand what I mean by the expression "double trouble". But you will know what I mean when you keep reading.

My family lives in Toronto, Ontario. I have a lovely wife, two beautiful daughters and a very naughty little son. Yes, my portrait picture is my son. I love my family. As I mentioned last week, I started a new job in Montreal, Quebec. The salary is not very good but I was still happy. I have to leave my family and came to work on my own. After my probation period, I will consider to relocate my family. I am getting training right now. It is a big company and good projects.

This city and this company seem to me a little slow and lack of energy. A little boring. Maybe it is because I don't know French. But this is a permanent position. I can settle down if I want. I have been dreaming about it for years.

Now here comes the double trouble. I got another offer from New York City in the US. This is a very challenging position, newer technology, better environment. The salary is very very high, more than double the salary here in Montreal. I can fly back and forth every week and still make more money than here. But that job is temporary, 6 months contract. New York is a very dynamic city and English only. After 6 months, am I able to find a job at least as good as the job here in Montreal? I have been struggling to make the decision since I got both of job offers. No final decision has been made yet! It's killing me. Too many things are involved into the consideration. Family, location, salary, experience gaining, professional growth, English, French, working environment, giving up the casino job, and so on and on and on ...

I prayed and prayed. I have been asking God to tell me the direction. Anyone here, please give me any advice after reading this! help!
  • I got a job

    2007-11-02 00:27:09

I started a new job this week. Salary is not very good but I am still happy. It is in another province. I left my family and came to work on my own. After my probation period, I will consider to relocate my family. I am getting training right now. It is a big company and good projects. I sense that communication is very important here. I need to take extra care about this.
  • Been actively looking for 2 months now

    2007-09-04 08:27:17

It has been 2 months since I started actively looking for a QA job. I've been busy almost everyday though. Almost every work day I will receive either email or phone call or both. Passing screening is easy, almost 100%. Interviewing with agent goes smoothly no matter face to face or over the phone, should be around 80%. HR and technical interviewing with company is tough, but I passed quite a few, about 50%. Now the last step, I did not realize that this step even exist, to interview with the clients, that fails every single time, 0%.

What blocks me at the last step? Soft skills? Hard skills? Just a measure of time?
  • Switching Computer Again

    2007-06-06 11:28:35

This morning when I walked into the office, I found some personal stuff on my desk. Even more surprisingly, there was a pair of lady's slippers under my desk. 10 minutes confusing later, I was told that I would be given another computer to work with. This is the second time switching computer and desk in 6 weeks.
Today I spent a whole day setting up testing environment on my 2 computers. Yes, this time I was given 2 computers. One is very slow, like 750M CPU and 512M memory, on Windows XP professional with constant Genuine Advantage Notice. It was with Ellen since I started the COOP position. I was amazed how she could possibly do her job on this piece. The other one is really beautiful. It's 3G CPU but only 512M memory. Jason helped me upgrading to 1G memory. He said this is all he could do. Now with VNC and VPC, I set up 3 test platforms on the 2 computers including WinRunner and Centura Add-in, QTP and .Net Add-in and TestAdvantage, both applications, all WinRunner scrīpts and a little of QTP scrīpts, getting rid of that Genuine Notice. Tomorrow I am gonna have some fun working really hard on testing.
  • New Instructions from Supervisor

    2007-05-26 03:54:34

My supervisor Peter gave me more specific instructions yesterday regarding of the method we are following to do our job. We get the expected results from executing WinRunner scrīpts on the old Centura application, while executing QTP scrīpts gives us actual results. Since we develop the QTP scrīpts following the same test cases the WinRunner scrīpts following, we are to do our test by comparing both scrīpts execution results.

    • Divide both scrīpts into functional sections by adding break points.
    • Execute WinRunner scrīpt until it stops at a break point.
    • Execute corresponding scrīpt section of QTP, it will stop at a same functionally speaking point.
    • Compare both results carefully.

When some issues occur, no matter there is an error message or any differences between both results, here are some ideas to handle them.

    • Scrīpt's issue: Give brief descrīption about the issue including line number and detail
    • Application's issue: Prepare the bug report following the procedure
    • Other problems: Get a way around them. Do NOT go into them in depth. Such as data sets we are using not matching, problems associated with old application, either the application itself or the scrīpts with it, etc.

I am trying to apply these principals now. It takes more time than I thought it would. Continuing from yesterday, today I started QTP scrīpt named Rls_SmokeLoanPrograms_2 at 9am from line 362. By 3pm, I was around QTP scrīpt line 1184. Corresponding WinRunner scrīpt lines were from 315 to 1169. To be drafted scrīpt test report 8 items, application test report 2 items.

How come do QTP scrīpts execute so slow comparing with super fast WinRunner scrīpt on Centura application? Is it an application performance issue, or a nature of the combination of QTP and its .Net add-in? TestAdvantage? Or a mixture? What ever.

That's enough for today's thought. This is payday for the company. I saw Diana  issue paychecks to stuff on the payroll. Not me unfortunately. I mean for now. I am not worrying, am I? My name will be put on the list someday. That's for sure.

God I thank you for giving me this opportunity to get into this new field. Your Word says "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might". I will do what You want me to do with my heart and my strength. Let me be a blessing to the people in this company. Let me grow with the company. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  • QA tester COOP

    2007-05-24 03:28:27

Getting experience is all we do everyday, nothing else. Life is to experience.

One month experience of working as a software tester seems not bad, even though the job is just like an entry level position, running test scrīpts created by others. The challenge is that when an issue occurs, you have to analyze what kind of issue it is. Is it an application issue, a scrīpt issue, or configuration problem of your tools.

Application issue leads to bug report to developers. scrīpt issue throws over to the scrīpt creater even if you already debugged it and probably it is just a misspelling. Other than those, you have to figure it out and make some adjustment yourself. Anything you do needs careful detailed documentation if you want to be efficient.

scrīpts can be running for hours and hours. Issues just come out during the running. When do you need to stop the scrīpt and do your documentation? Too soon it will be less productive and boring. Too long you will possibly forget something. Even worse if you can not finish all the issues before the end of the day. You will have to start it over the next day in this case.

Well, I think it is just enough for me to start making documentation. 3:30pm already. Team lead came to ask me my progress. I have not finished one scrīpt today. But two long lists of both kind of issue are at hand now. Let me generate them and show some achievement for today.
